Hello guys.
Surely you’ve asked yourself several times: “How can I improve my Groove? “.
And this is normal, during the process we always look for a formula to apply, but we would like to inform you that there is no magic formula, but there is a process.
Today we are going to cover 3 simple steps for you to improve your groove, obviously there are other processes that are even complementary, but for this moment it is not necessary.
Everything that we will talk about here was applied and executed by our team, however, as it is a simple process, it will certainly work for you, however, we are different people and for each one there is a time of evolution, some faster, others a little longer, but evolution is guaranteed.
Let’s go to the steps:
Step 1: LISTEN
To hear? Yea!
It may seem like a silly step, however, let’s get to the points, many of our followers ask us how they can evolve in the groove, but when we ask what the person listens to daily? The answer is most often the same; I listen to everything.
So, there’s the first point to be corrected, if you want to evolve your groove, start listening to more groove, look for bands or bassists that play a lot of Groove, R&B, Soul, Funk, Jazz.
Think with me, the more you listen to something, the easier it is for you to exhale what you are hearing. When you listen more, our mind keeps several ideas of lines, phrases, with this you will create a database where everything you have been listening to is saved, and when you play, these ideas will probably stay alive in your mind, helping you to come up with new ideas and even apply phrases you thought you couldn’t apply.
Try to do this exercise, listen to Groove a lot, you will notice that your ideas and language will gradually improve, and your groove ideas will get richer and with more possibilities.
2 Step: PLAY
Now that you’ve heard enough Groove references, it’s time for you to reproduce what you’ve heard.
Calm down, let’s take it easy, first get a song, your obligation will be to play this song according to the original, play it 100%, if you can’t, let it be 90%, 80% or 70%, but the reproduction has to be very close to the original, no change anything, don’t add anything like phrases and others, just play the original.
But, why should I produce the same as the original music?
Simple, when you play, you are basically playing the same as the bass player you are listening to, if you reached the point of producing 100% of the original song, you are playing the same as the original bass player (at least in this song), with that we can say that you had an evolution, you were able to take all the parts of the original song, and with that you were able to execute it perfectly. With that your mind will save all this information.
A tip for you: Do it slowly, if you have a very long sentence, do it slowly, when you do things slowly, you have a much higher level of evolution, and that way you can analyze mistakes and know where they need to be corrected.
If necessary, play as many times as necessary.
It may be that you come across some techniques that you don’t know yet, simplify this technique or stop and go study and develop this technique.
An example: If the song you listened to has Slap, play the song without Slap, after playing the song, study and learn the basics of Slap, when you are more confident in Slap try to apply it to the song you are playing. That way, you evolve while playing what you like.
3 Step: TEST
Okay, now let’s go to the test or laboratory part, in this part after listening and playing a song, now we’re going to test new phrases, new grooves, everything in moderation of course.
In this phase, you will perform tests, enjoy parts of the song and exchange the original phrases for phrases you created, or mix, make a part of the original phrase or groove of the song and in another part make a phrase or groove that you created, this way , you start to force your creativity, and as you have already heard and reproduced, your musicality will surely tell you where to play an X groove or a Y phrase, don’t be afraid to test, this phase is for that, do all the tests If possible, feel free to use phrases or grooves from another song in the song you are performing.
Use this process to perform many tests.
Well, I hope these 3 steps can help you reader to improve your groove, it’s a simple process, but it takes time and dedication to get results, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, be afraid to stand still.
